Shadeflip doesn't collect, send or share anything. Here is exactly what it keeps on your device, and why.

What Shadeflip stores

Only your settings: the default for all sites, and each site you've set to dark, light or off. For those sites, it also remembers whether the site looked dark or light last time, so the page doesn't flash the wrong color while it loads.

All of this is saved in your browser's extension storage. If you've turned on your browser's own sync, such as Firefox Sync or Chrome sync, your browser may copy your settings to your other devices. Shadeflip itself never sends them anywhere.

In private windows, Shadeflip still applies your saved choices, but a site you flip there stays flipped only until you close the tab. Nothing about it is saved.

What Shadeflip doesn't do

• It doesn't collect, send, sell or share any personal data.
• It doesn't keep a record of the sites you visit.
• It doesn't read what you type or the text of the pages you visit. It looks only at a page's background colors, on your device, to tell whether the page is already dark.
• It makes no network requests and contains no analytics or ads.

Why it asks for access to all websites

When you install Shadeflip, your browser warns that it can "read and change all your data on all websites" (Chrome) or "access your data for all websites" (Firefox). Shadeflip needs that access to apply your choice as each page loads, before you see it, on any site you pick. It uses it for nothing else. It also asks for storage, to save your settings, and to add a Shadeflip settings item when you right-click its toolbar button.

Removing your data

To clear one site, open Shadeflip's settings and remove it from the list. Removing Shadeflip from your browser deletes what it stored in that browser. If your browser's sync is on, a synced copy of your settings may stay with your browser account and come back if you install Shadeflip again. To clear them everywhere, remove the sites from the list before removing Shadeflip.

shadeflip.com is a static site hosted on GitHub Pages. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. GitHub, as the host, may log standard request data; see GitHub's privacy statement.
